Innovative "Engineering Exploration" Program for First-Year Students

"Engineering Exploration" is a unique educational initiative, exclusively designed for first-year students. This innovative program, based on Project-Based Learning (PBL), provides students with the opportunity to tackle real-time social and industrial problems, nurturing their skills and creativity from the very start of their engineering journey.

The Engineering Exploration program is meticulously designed with various modules to nurture the diverse skills and qualities of students. The program builds a robust foundation in mechanisms, design, and physical science, while also enhancing students' programming skills, particularly in computer engineering. By working on multiple platforms and microcontrollers, students gain practical experience in implementing, observing, and evaluating system performance and usability.

A standout feature of the program is the Innovation Lab, a state-of-the-art facility where students can bring their innovative ideas to life. This lab is accessible to all first-year students and is instrumental in helping them understand the what, how, and why aspects of Engineering, Technology, and Mathematics. Through this program, students engage in projects that solve real-world problems, ranging from healthcare to agriculture, thereby igniting their passion for innovation.

The entire program is free and beyond regular curriculum and being very methodically designed to nurture the budding technocrats from day one of their engineering studies. It is started with a very systematic approach first by creating awareness about engineering and then with a step-by-step approach developing their design thinking mindset, problem solving skills and interdisciplinary approach by understanding present and future technology trends and challenges.

The major outcomes of the Engineering Exploration program include enhanced student creativity, a deeper understanding of the role of engineers as problem solvers, and improved project management skills. The program also introduces students to ethical and sustainability perspectives, preparing them for the challenges of modern engineering.

Notable projects developed by first-year students include a wireless stethoscope, instant water purifier, automatic baby swinging machine, smart health band, home automation systems, walking and talking robots, gesture-controlled robots, and IoT-based agriculture projects. These projects, over 70 in total, demonstrate the practical and innovative applications of engineering in various sectors.

Execution Methodology for Engineering Exploration

The course covers a comprehensive range of engineering fundamentals and practices. It begins with an introduction to engineering, distinguishing it from science, exploring various engineering disciplines, and addressing common misconceptions while outlining the expectations for 21st-century engineers. It then delves into engineering ethics, emphasizing the importance of professional conduct, recognizing ethical dilemmas, and applying moral theories for resolution. The design unit covers the engineering design process, multidisciplinary aspects, and evaluation tools like Pairwise Comparison and Pugh Charts, along with concepts in mechatronics and motor and battery sizing. Mechanisms are explored through basic components, speed and torque differences, velocity ratios, and various mechanisms. Platform-based development focuses on Arduino programming and interfacing with sensors and actuators. Project management is introduced with agile practices, teamwork, communication, and tools like Gantt charts and checklists. Data acquisition and analysis involve using Microsoft Excel for descriptive statistics, acquiring data with Arduino sensors, and visualizing this data. Finally, sustainability in engineering is addressed through topics like sustainability leadership, life cycle assessment, and carbon footprint, emphasizing the integration of environmental considerations into engineering practices.

Students Feedback about Engineering Exploration

I am a student of 1st year engineering from artificial intelligence and data science branch. While studying in Engineering exploration I found development in my skills like critical thinking, problem solving skills, project management, teamwork and coordination and also learn various types of microcontrollers and also developed my interest in engineering. I also learn about various gears and mechanism which are belongs to mechanical engineering and found very interesting. This is a very good concept. -Aniket Vilas Wahul, Branch: AI&DS, Mob. 9405419793

I am a student of Electronics Engineering (VLSI Design). Here in Engineering Exploration, I studied many things related to my branch as well as other branches like Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering. I made a walking and talking robot along with my team and during this journey, I have learned internet of things, various gears, drives from mechanical engineering, software’s, coding programming, how to interface sensors and microcontrollers which I found very interesting. Also, I learn teamwork, leadership and time management while completing my project in engineering exploration. I am sure that it will be helpful to my career in engineering. -Vaishnavi Balasaheb Shelke, Electronics Engineering (VLSI Design), Mob. 9822251647
